Women makes most of the financial decisions in the household and need free time to focus on their consumption. It’s because women are the project manager of the family. And that consumption has to be financed by men. That’s why men finds it important to make money and women finds it important to have a job that allows them to be flexible. In Sex and the City these values are marketed with consumption in the pursuit of finding happiness and a partner. And what other chance would they have for that kind of product placement? If women were making their own money and work for a living, like most of us do, they would be more independent and have less time for consume. So how can you fit in Manolos into that equation?

Sorry to say - everything moves slowley. We are all fooled by luxury and fame.

Like your writing - hope young women read and learn!

Katrine, well written.

I used to work in Asia after my graduation.

I leaned from my female colleagues to make sure I had control over my finances. I leaned a lot. Saving is better then spending. All female colleagues knew how to make sure to have this "feel good bank account".

And I pass it on to my 4 kids. Spend less than you earn, and build up your own account. Do it yourself and trust no man in this area.

Maybe because we're paid less than men? So men are still our path to financial security?

Perhaps the loaded men in SatC and BJ has more to do with male gender roles than female ones? The definition of a real man is still a loaded man (and as I write this I realize that of course male and female gender roles interact as opposites, back to square one).
